Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens. F.A. Seiberling, founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his wife Gertrude built their country home Stan Hywet during the years 1912-1915. The name comes from the Old English for “stone quarry,” which is the estate’s main natural feature. In 1957, the Seiberling family donated the 65-room Tudor-style mansion to a non-profit organization so that the public could enjoy this majestic home and setting. Tours, which are available from April through December, include the gardens, the Gate Lodge (originally built for the estate’s superintendent) and the Corbin Conservatory. The Stan Hywet Symposium. Entitled “On Display: Historic Homes and Great Estates,” the first annual Stan Hywet Symposium will take place October 17-18, 2008. A wide range of historical, architectural and preservation issues will be discussed during the two- day event, which was organized with the cooperation of the University of Akron and Kent State University.
